California School Nutrition Judgement Day

Sometimes change is gradual food, and sometimes it happens overnight. Soon, habits and dietary practices of California Public Schools has been changed forever. The change, which many still do not know, or unprepared for, will take place July 7, 2007 when California SB 12 finally comes into force.

During the night, food was allowed before, will be forever banned from public schools. This is actually a good thing in many ways. School districts will be forced to cut many huge contracts with fast food, sweets and soft drinks makers that were so terrible for the students of the districts were accused of breeding. The issue of nutrition and what it means for youth development at last beginning to take seriously. Finally, the issue of childhood obesity to lose control eventually be addressed. The only problem may be that many districts will be left struggling solutions to obtain healthy fundraising.

On July 1, 2007 California SB 12 will take place. This will require that all food sold outside the school meal programs to middle school and high school students be approved for nutritional standards. In the past, anything can be sold by groups for fundraising or vending, this is changing. That's why the search for sound solutions and fundraising will so important. According to Senate Bill 12 California food, taken as snacks should not contain more than 35% of their calories from fat, 10% of saturation fat, sugar, no more than 35% by weight and not more than 250 calories. The only exception to those rules if the food will be sold off-site school or at least 30 minutes after the end of the school day or during a school sponsored event after the end of the school day.

This change will be enormous as compliance with nutrition standards will no longer be a case of the school or district policy, or even the recommendations of state welfare. Meeting the nutrition standards will now be the law of California, and those seeking to raise funds without the healthy fundraising solutions would be violating law. If a group of California public schools, club or team is selling candy or junk food in violation of California SB 12 on the campus during the school day, which club leader or coach is causing them to break the law. This is why the search for sound solutions and fundraising is so important.

Things happen that are powerful laws and cause a great change that is ultimately positive. This is one of those times. The implementation and enforcement of California SB 12 will not be easy but the effect will be a net gain for students, coaches and school administrators who seek healthy solutions for fundraising.

Any ideas for further Fundraising Ball?

In our school, senior ball (prom) is held off campus, and therefore, no we can fund raise on campus (it's a big legal problem.) We need $ 7,000 by January 23, and a little short (around $ 2,500). We made T-shirts and sweatshirts high, but we're trying to do something else. Any ideas? And please know we can do car washes and bake sales … so any idea innovative? Many thanks!

talent show, marathon, or go to a store that sells wholesale like Costco or Sam's Club and you could buy candy like M & Ms in a box and sold for a dollar or a Hershey's chocolate. They go fast in my school and many people like candy. There will be an auction, like maybe some individuals can offer useful services such as tutoring, dance classes, a date, you can imagine what it would be appropriate. The local Carl's Jr. in my area has coupon books especially fundraising so that I could try that, but I'm not sure if available in your area. Try going to a restaurant popular / hang out and see if you can raise funds there, like a pizza or an ice cream shop, and as perhaps you guys get 20% of sales or something.
